$$ I Hope Verizon Likes Money $$
A recent survey suggests that if the rumors about a Verizon iPhone are true and if said phone is coming in January ‘11, then Big Red (and Apple) stand to make money by the boat tanker load.

Of course you might expect folks from all of the other carriers to come to Verizon for an iPhone, but what is really surprising to me is that 51% of current Verizon customers would purchase an iPhone on the carrier. Given that Verizon has been pushing, and has sold, a ton of Android handsets including the Droid, Droid X, Droid 2, and HTC Incredible which have all come to market with the last year or so, means a lot of folks are willing to either pay full retail for the phone or are hoping that Verizon offers some kind of exception that will allow customers to renew for another two years regardless of where they are in their current contract.
iPhone rumors are like belly buttons, everybody has one, but some are “innies” and some are “outies.’ That is, some buy in to the rumors, while others rule out the possibility altogether. Okay, so that’s a little bit weak, but you can’t ignore all the iPhone to Verizon talk at this point. They’re ordering CDMA chips, AT&T is hedging on their SEC filings, and - bottom line - Apple knows how to best affect their bottom line.
Personally, I’m torn. I switched from my 3G to the Droid Incredible in April and while I’ve been generally quite happy with Android it still just isn’t quite the same as the iPhone experience. My biggest gripe is with the media / media player integration. While Double Twist helps with playlist management and syncing, access to apps, and playback on the device itself it can’t quite stand up to iTunes just yet.
Back to the point. While my disdain for Apple reached a peak when I was told that my old 3G wouldn’t support some of the best features in iOS 4, I can’t help but think about the good times that I had with my iPhone, or how iPhone + Verizon would be the best of both worlds. Well, that is until all the folks jumping off AT&T’s network start to put a hurtin’ on Big Red.
If, by some small miracle, LTE support gets packaged into the January 2011 release of Verizon’s iPhone I don’t know if I’m going to be able to resist. Are you a Verizon customer willing to ditch your Android device?
