iPhone Vs. Incredible - Best Features(?)

It’s a widely held belief by now that the iPhone is coming to Verizon as early as January of 2011.  This is great news for the folks like me that, up until now, have opted for network reliability over device appeal.  I owned the iPhone 3G, but a combination of frustration with AT&T’s network and poor device performance brought on by the update of iOS to 4.0 caused me to jump ship for Verizon and the Droid Incredible.

I’ve been quite happy with my Incredible, but still question whether or not I would welcome the iPhone back with open arms with it’s arrival on the Verizon network.  There are really great things to be said about each device and even features that are mutually exclusive to either device.  Perhaps someone out there can help me settle the debate.

Apple iPhone
+ Best media player / media integration.
+ Push notifications.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the iPhone is a great media player.  Not only does iTunes make it easy to shop for movies and music, it’s great for organizing and syncing as well.  Want to hear a specific song or watch a TV episode from your library?  You can search from it right from the home screen and play it in less than 10 seconds.  Even with DoubleTwist, I still find this relatively cumbersome on the Incredible.

The other great feature found on the iPhone comes in the form of Push notifications.  I used this all the time for sports scores and whatnot, but you can have just about any piece of information delivered right to your home screen, whether you’re actively using the device or not.

Droid Incredible
+ PDA-Net
+ Swype

Hands-down, the best app I’ve found for my Incredible is PDA Net.  For $10 it lets me connect my computer to the internet from anywhere I have cell service.  No more paying for wi-fi hot spots, no more being tethered to my desk.  I’ve even used this feature while sitting in the back seat of the car driving down the highway.  That’s pretty sick.  Also, I think it’s something that is probably locked down on the iPhone (please, correct me if I’m wrong).

The other cool thing I’ve experienced through the Android platform is the Swype text input method.  It’s quick, it’s accurate, and it’s kind of fun to use.  Given the bevy of auto-correct issues I’ve seen on the iPhone I’m a little hesitant to give up.

So, is there anything here that I’ve missed?  What features have you found on either of these devices that would make you not want to give it up?  On the other hand, are there features that you miss after having made the switch from one to the other?

StumbleUpon this…

Most of you are probably familiar with the concept of StumbleUpon.com already.  They do after-all have more than 10 million registered users, which isn’t too shabby.

Even Oprah endorses the service, so if you are already a subscriber, you are in good company.

So what’s new?  An official Android application for StumbleUpon, that’s what’s new!

$$ I Hope Verizon Likes Money $$

A recent survey suggests that if the rumors about a Verizon iPhone are true and if said phone is coming in January ‘11, then Big Red (and Apple) stand to make money by the boat tanker load.

Of course you might expect folks from all of the other carriers to come to Verizon for an iPhone, but what is really surprising to me is that 51% of current Verizon customers would purchase an iPhone on the carrier. Given that Verizon has been pushing, and has sold, a ton of Android handsets including the Droid, Droid X, Droid 2, and HTC Incredible which have all come to market with the last year or so, means a lot of folks are willing to either pay full retail for the phone or are hoping that Verizon offers some kind of exception that will allow customers to renew for another two years regardless of where they are in their current contract.

Droid Does, but you don’t…

OKCupid released a survey today which has garnered a little attention attempting to prove a correlation between which phone you use, and how often you have sex.

Phone Sex

The study consisted of 30 year-olds who own three major smartphone types:  Android, iPhone and Blackberry, and focused on number of sexual partners.  Here is a pretty chart to explain:

OkCupid Chart

To use a lame pun, iPhone users came out on top, while Android users were deemed sexless by the study.

But what of the methodology?  Number of partners really doesn’t translate into amount of sex does it?  And of the fact that women have more partners than men.  Didn’t see that coming, did you?

What about users who aren’t 30 years old?  Is this an anamoly?  Nope, check this pretty graph out.  It’s all “sciency” looking, so it has to mean something, right?

OkCupid Graph

Here is my hypothesis, and please let me know if I’m way off base:  Nerds are more likely to buy an open source phone, while cool hipsters are more likely to buy a trendy iPhone.  What of the Blackberry users you ask?  I believe they are more likely to be a cross-section of everyone, since most Blackberry users are such because their job requires it.

So does this mean that nerds are less likely to have sex?  I don’t think so, but if it is true, I certainly hope it isn’t because we are all ugly, (with the obvious exception of nerd super-hottie, Megan Fox).  Remember, this survey reflects only number of partners, so the sample really speaks to whether or not someone is promiscuous, not whether or not they are sexually active.

If that theory doesn’t hold water, then the reason for the results is obvious.  Cupidtino is putting iPhone users together in much bigger numbers than anticipated, and the apocalypse is on the horizon.  If this is the case, then you can throw all of my reasons to get a Droid-X out the window, because the fate of the human race relies on your ability to procreate, and you should must go out an purchase an iPhone.  Just pray that when you are calling to arrange your hook-up that you get a signal…especially if you are left-handed.

I believe this study really shows that nerds are more likely to be monogamous, while hipsters are more likely to have different partners. If this isn’t the case, and the survey really demonstrates causality, then America has stopped messing around, since Android is now the #1 US Mobile operating system.  Doubtful, right?

I’d like to see studies done to correlate nerdiness to promiscuity, or nerdiness to smartphone use.  Can you develop a methodology to do this?

Please share your thoughts.  Feel free to chime in with your preferred OS, and tell us:  Do you consider yourself a nerd?
