Five Nerds hasn’t made much of a secret out of our misunderstanding of AOL, and more importantly, why anyone still needs AOL.
It appears that AOL editors, Topolsky and Patel concur.

I think most savvy computer users would agree that AOL is the antithesis of King Midas when it comes to technology. Everything they touch turns to crap.
Popular tech-blog, TechCrunch announced recently that they have been acquired by AOL, in what seems like a surprising move, given how brutally honest TechCrunch has been in the past when it comes to AOL missteps.

TechCrunch recently blogged an article for followers who inquired ‘where we go from here?’
We have some hypotheses on this matter. Here is a Letterman-style Top Ten List:
10. People will have to switch back to dial-up to access TechCrunch.
9. TechCrunch will change their URL to http://members.aol.com/TechCrunch, or keyword TechCrunch on AOL.
8. When you log on, you will be greeted with a familiar voice which says, “you have TechCrunch.”
7. AOL will release TechCrunch commercials featuring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks
6. If you attempt to unsubscribe to TechCrunch, you will be called repeatedly by AOL to offer you two free months of TechCrunch.
5. If someone complains about you on TechCrunch, you will be TOS’d immediately, without opportunity to explain or defend yourself.
4. When I attempt to register on TechCrunch, a helpful message will inform me that rsquare is taken, and suggest that I select rsquare62943 instead.
3. TechCrunch will become a key weapon in AOL’s war against their biggest competitor, and WebTV will suffer a brutal death, once and for all.
2. TechCrunch will be transformed into a haven for Viagra SPAM, and get rich quick Ponzi schemes.
1. I’m going to go make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich while my TechCrunch loads.
